michael gilman. licsw. acsw I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with over 20 years of professional experience with individuals, families and organizations.  I view my role as a consultant or coach for people in developing their own abilities to take on the challenges and opportunities presented to them.  I utilize a family systems perspective developed by Dr. Murray Bowen. I believe that family experiences shape our thinking about relationships and how we function in them.

Understanding the dynamics and patterns in which individuals engage can lead to better self management in relationships --whether in families, marriages, partnerships or in the workplace. I think that as individuals increase their level of self awareness they become better equipped to navigate the challenges presented to them.  When individuals put efforts into changing themselves I believe that interesting and creative ways of addressing challenges begin to emerge. Managing self requires the ability to find ways to step back from the moment to gain a broader perspective, to gather facts, to strengthen one’s knowledge, and to think through a plan of action.

In my clinical practice, I work with adolescents, adults, families and couples.  My clinical interests include health, nutrition, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, sexual orientation and gender identity.  My consulting work is directed towards for-profit and non-profit organizations and includes individuals in leadership as well as with staff and Boards of Directors.  My work for educational institutions has included speaking engagements at state and national levels as well as with local community groups and schools.  I am an Adjunct Faculty Member at the University of Vermont and have taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in social work and counseling.

appointments and fees
Psychotherapy appointments are 50 minutes in length.  My fee is $100.00 a session. I accept most insurances.  Please see the "rates and insurance" page for information you are responsible for gathering from your insurance company.  I do have a sliding fee scale for individuals without insurance.  Deductibles and copayments are due at the time of each session.
If you need to cancel an appointment I do require 24-hours notice, so that I can schedule people waiting for appointments.  If you do not give enough notice or miss the appointment, you will be charged my full fee.

Fees for organizational consultation and education can be discussed directly with me.
